Masks

Throughout history, masks have held supernatural symbolism. Ancient African masks were meant to scare off evil spirits. The original meaning behind Halloween was to disguise yourself as a spirit so that you could walk among them without being discovered. This belief was the initial concept behind the Ghost Hunters' masks.

Masks are the physical manifestation of a Hunter’s soul (not to be confused with their spirit), and are often referred to as a soul-face. Each one resembles a skull in some way, however slight. A Hunter is able to make their mask appear out of thin air. When first taught how to do this, a student will wave a hand over their face, the mask appearing in its wake, allowing for a more central focus and thus better concentration. After sufficient training this is no longer required to make the mask appear, but most Hunters do so anyway out of habit. Students are not allowed to be schooled in telekinesis or clairvoyance until they can make their masks materialize whole.

A mask's basic design is a white background with a colored design on top. The number of colors on a mask is not limited to one, but is never more than three. All masks have eye socekts. Whether the eye sockets are large and circular or tiny slits, they are viewed as black and opaque when on the owner's face and transparent when off. The size and shape of the eye sockets don't impede the owner's vision either, as the mask is their soul.

There is no string that keeps the mask in place on the hunter’s face; it stays there because it is an extension of their self. They can push it up on top of their head or even to the side and it will stay there with no further prompting. The mask can be taken off and put back on easily, but only by its owner. Other people or ghosts are unable to move the mask, even when off the owner’s head, though the mask cannot exist too far from its owner or else it dissolves. Each mask is unique. Even the masks of hunters who are twins are not identical.

Each career path has its own need for the masks. Ghost mediators wear theirs more of an identity than the other careers. It shows that they have a position of authority and that they are able to help. Ghost hunters need it for protection while fighting spirits and since they often use spells, the added power that comes from the manifestation of a mask is of great assistance. The reason the spirit-smiths need a mask should be obvious. They deal with raw energy and are required to focus and condense that energy on a daily basis. With the mask they can control the energy and keep it from getting out of hand. Psychoscientists often use clairvoyance in their job, so the masks are needed for that. The experiments with spirits and energy that they carry out are able to be better controlled with a mask. For ghost consulates a mask doubles as a great 'poker face' in times where no emotion can be shown (i.e. sneaky double-dealing & political intrigue). For all five careers the mask is a symbol of official status and power, and it also allows them to hide their identity from normal humans, should it ever be needed as such.
