Hunters see the spiritual realm as a shadow world to their own. Their world, the "real world", is tangible and ever-present, but the spiritual world is there too, in the back of their minds, hiding behind the existence of their own world. Definitely disconcerting at first, they grow accustomed to its presence fairly quickly.
When first taught to see the spiritual realm, people first see only ghosts and spirits (they may or may not have a partner at this time). That is because people don't realize that there is in fact an entire world that parallels our own (including trees, grass, buildings, etc.), and not just the ghosts themselves. By being able to see this "shadow world", this allows Hunters to see certain currents of energy as well, like the igniting of a paper spell or the energy that spirit-smiths handle to create weapons.
There are different "densities", so to speak, at which one can view the spirit plane. With training and much concentration, a Hunter can force the spiritual realm to the front of their senses, which in turn forces the real world to the back, until it is the Hunter's own world that appears to be in the shadow of the ghostly realm. Increasing the density of the spirit world will allow a Hunter to see higher spectrums of energy, such as a person's aura, which Hunters can read to discern what move an opponent will make before they make it, among other things. This specific adaptation would be at the higher end of the spectrum and, as such, be more difficult.
The longer a Hunter views the world like this and the higher the density at which it is viewed, the more energy the task requires. The only level that requires no energy at all is the basic level where the spirit realm is just a shadow behind the real world. It is rare that any other density be required, as most Hunters are able to do their jobs at the basic level.
More info to come at a later date.
